Most GEO work needs a web person. This fix needs a text editor and ten minutes, and it is the rare job an owner can finish before the morning class checks in.

We summarised llms.txt as one of the seven fixes in GEO for fitness businesses. This is the full, practical version: what the file is, what a gym should put in it, a complete example to adapt, and the mistakes that quietly undo the whole exercise.

What llms.txt actually is

llms.txt is a plain text file, written in simple markdown, that lives at the root of your website. Its job is orientation. Where robots.txt tells crawlers what they may read, llms.txt tells AI systems what to make of what they find: who you are, what you offer, and which pages carry the facts.

It is a young convention, and adoption among AI systems is uneven and growing. Engines that search the live web can fetch it the way they fetch any page, and the ones that support it treat it as a curated map of your site. The honest pitch is this: it costs ten minutes, it can only help, and it hands machines the description of your gym in your own words instead of leaving them to assemble one from fragments.

What a gym should include

Keep it to one screen of text. Five ingredients cover a fitness business:

Identity. One or two sentences saying what you are, who you are for, and where you are. Plain and specific: the style of training, the vibe, the neighbourhood.

Location and hours. The address, the areas you serve, and where to find current opening hours.

Classes and services. The class types and coaching you offer, each pointing at the page that describes it.

The money page. A direct link to memberships and prices. Assistants get asked about cost constantly, and the gyms that answer plainly get quoted.

The FAQ. If you have a page answering real member questions, list it. You are telling the machine where the ready-made answers live.

A complete example

Here is a realistic file for a fictional gym. Adapt it rather than copying it blind; every line should be true of your business.

## Location and hours

Ironhold Strength Club, 14 Foundry Lane, Leeds. Open early mornings and
evenings on weekdays, full days at weekends. Current hours are on the
[contact page](https://ironholdclub.example/contact).

That is the whole trick. A machine reading this knows what Ironhold is, who it is for, and where every important fact lives.

The mistakes that undo it

The file fails in predictable ways, and all of them are avoidable.

Marketing fluff. “Unleash your potential at the ultimate fitness destination” tells a machine nothing it can match to a question. Every sentence should carry a checkable fact: the place, the training style, the audience.

Links to pages that do not exist. A dead link in llms.txt is worse than a missing one, because you have pointed the machine at your own broken promise. Click every URL after you upload.

Staleness. The file mentions the old studio, last year’s class names, prices you raised in spring. Contradiction between llms.txt and your website is a trust problem you built yourself. Put it on the quarterly reminder alongside the timetable.

Listing everything. Twenty links is a directory, five links is a map. Curate. The point is telling machines which pages matter most.

If your platform will not let you upload files

Site builders vary in how easily they let you place a file at the root, and this is the one place the ten minute promise can wobble.

On WordPress, a file manager plugin or the hosting control panel gets it done, and several SEO plugins now offer an llms.txt feature directly. Squarespace, Wix, and similar builders may need their developer or code injection routes, and some plans do not allow root files at all. Shopify stores can usually serve it through a small app or a theme asset with a redirect.

If your platform genuinely cannot serve the file, do not contort your site to fake it. Put the same clean summary on a plain about page instead, and spend your energy on the fixes your platform does allow: structured data, readable pages, consistent details. llms.txt is a signpost, and a site that cannot hang the signpost can still keep the shop in order.

How to check it works

Three checks, one minute each.

First, open yourdomain.com/llms.txt in a private browser window. If it loads as plain text, it is reachable.

Second, click every link in it. Each one should land on a live page.

Third, run the free AI visibility check. It reads your site the way an AI crawler does, and one of its ten signals is whether a valid llms.txt exists at your root. You get the confirmation, plus the score on the nine other signals while you are there.

If writing the file from scratch feels like friction, our llms.txt generator builds a valid one for a gym or studio from a short form, ready to download and upload.

Ten minutes, then the bigger picture

llms.txt is the cheapest move in AI visibility, and it is one move. It cannot compensate for blocked crawlers, unreadable timetables, or a web that says nothing about you. When you want to know how the whole picture looks, which of the fixes you are missing and in what order to take them, request a full audit. We ask the assistants the questions your prospects ask and hand back the answer with a plan attached.

But do the ten minute job first. Few things in this field feel as good as finishing a real fix before breakfast.
